Fellowships for Parent Artists & Writers

Deadline: October 1, 2012

The Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, Vermont hosts 50 artists and writers each month who participate in 4 to 12 week independent studio Residencies. Here are two fellowship opportunities specifically for artists and writers who are raising young children:

Sustainable Arts Foundation Fellowships: Two awards will be awarded: one 4-week and one 2-week residency fellowship. These awards include a stipend ($2,000 for the 4-week residency and $1,000 for the 2-week residency) to cover lost income, travel, childcare, and other costs related to taking time away from the family.

Residencies are offered based on a review of the portfolio or manuscript submitted by each applicant. The applications are reviewed by a revolving jury of VSC visiting artists and writers and are based on merit as seen by the jury. While application for residency may be submitted at any time, applicants who wish to be considered for a fellowship must submit their application by one of the three annual fellowship deadlines (October 1, 2012 --- February 15, 2013 --- June 15, 2013)

It is best to apply at least six months in advance of your preferred start date, though they will consider applications received as late as six weeks in advance of the month(s) for which one is applying. Summer and fall Residencies are the most popular and competitive; the recommended deadline for summer fellowships is the October deadline.
