We're looking for five individuals—a Creative Nonfiction/Fiction Editorial Assistant, a Poetry Editorial Assistant, a Columns Editor, a Newsletter Editor, and a Social Media Editor—to join our efforts in publishing literary writing about motherhood.

Please note: These are volunteer positions. All work is conducted remotely, via internet.

The Details

 

Editorial Assistants – Fiction/Creative Nonfiction, Poetry

Our Editorial Assistants proofread and perform final copyedits on the website, ensuring that our monthly publishing schedule and editorial standards are met.

Qualifications and Expectations

  • Proficient with Chicago Manual of Style
  • Proficient with, or a willingness to learn about, content management systems, group email conversations, and cloud-sharing programs
  • 4 to 6 hours a month, depending on the number of submissions in the department

 

Columns Editor

Our Columns Editor works with our columnists to help them tell their stories and participates in editorial discussions about other column proposals.

Qualifications and Expectations

  • Experienced in writing, editing, and critiquing as evidenced by publication credits, teaching career, or writing group participation
  • Open-minded and able to find something positive about any piece of writing
  • Knowledgeable, or a willingness to learn, about group email conversations, editing software, cloud-sharing programs, and content management systems
  • 4 to 6 hours a week, depending on the number of submissions in the department

 

Newsletter Editor

Our Newsletter Editor creates a monthly electronic newsletter promoting our most recent issue of Literary Mama as well as our most recent blog posts. This editor also manages our subscriber database; monitors open and click rates; and understands how a newsletter can be used to promote a product.

Qualifications and Expectations

  • Proficient in writing and formatting email marketing tools
  • Experience with group email conversations, and cloud-sharing programs
  • Organized, detail- and deadline-oriented
  • 1 to 3 hours a month

 

Social Media Editor

Our Social Media Editor creates and maintains a consistent presence with Literary Mama followers to promote new features on the magazine and new posts on the blog. This editor also engages in conversations with like-minded organizations by “liking,” “sharing,” “tweeting,” “retweeting,” “pinning,” and commenting on their posts, and monitors performance metrics regarding posts, reach, and engagement.

Qualifications and Expectations

  • Proficient with one or more social media platforms
  • Knowledgeable about social media marketing metrics
  • Thinks like a marketer and understands how social media can be used to promote a product
  • Experience with group email and cloud-sharing programs
  • 1 to 3 hours a week

Our current team hails from nearly 30 locations throughout the world and includes communications professionals, university professors, MFA students, writers, editors, copyeditors, photographers, and moms. We're passionate about motherhood, the written word, and the community that brings the two together. We believe we inhabit a unique space in the publishing world and hope you agree. Karna Converse is a freelance writer who’s written everything from technical documentation and price proposals to newsletter articles, devotionals, personal profiles and essays. Her essays have been published in a variety of regional and national publications, including The Christian Science Monitor, Notre Dame Magazine, the Cup of Comfort and Chicken Soup anthologies, Our Iowa, and on Iowa Public Radio. She’s serving as Literary Mama‘s Editor-in-Chief from her home in Storm Lake, Iowa. She and her husband are parents to three young adults.
