A Birthday in the Making

and hold you up to the light to look inside your hollow eye sockets,
a panorama of parking lot’s thistles of plastic amber only yet transposes
to embers with a single blow: my, you have lovely holes.
The cinders circle back to me, through your eyes, showing me the distances
we have traveled, measured.
