Literary Mama writing about the many faces of motherhood
Let’s Call This What It Is

A crocodile
Swallows anything it sees
Through veiled eyes.

This one is coming for me.

In through the locked door
Hulking
It wants to be seen,
Ancient and prehistoric,
At the very core of life.

I know what you are

I have locked you out
Shoved you out
Veiled my own eyes against you.

And that baby boy?
He drowned
Drowned in that goddamn river
Such terrible, terrible grief.

The crocodiles are waiting
--thrashing--
To be let in.

Many thanks to Michelle for inspiring me to write what was necessary.
